GLOSSARY

Northern and Southern dynasties (386-589)

Long period of political disunity after the fall of the Han dynasty. During this time, China was divided into a large number of smaller kingdoms. The period is a part of what is also generally known as the Six Dynasties (220-589). See: Chronology Section for details
