GLOSSARY

Nanking porcelain

"Nanking" porcelain, often confused with Blue Willow ware, was Chinese export porcelain decorated in blue and white, made in Jingdezhen and shipped from the port of Nanking. Polychrome export porcelain was shipped through Canton.

"Canton" is in the same manner sometimes used as a loose descriptive name of all crude enameled Chinese export porcelain from late 19th century. Canton ware is sub divided in many families of their own, such as hundred butterflies, rose medallion, rose mandarin etc., and sometimes comes with a celadon enamel ground.
