GLOSSARY

Kwangtung ware

Old name for pottery from the Shiwan or Shekwan kiln area in the Pearl River delta immediately outside Canton in the Guangdong province in southern China. The kiln area goes back to the Song dynasty and are still active. The pottery are recognizable on its dark or brownish clay which seems to be a mixture of porcelain clay mixed up with local river mud, and its thick and often gaudy glazes. In late 19th and early 20th century much of the production seems to have been green glazed ulitarian wares for everyday household use even if figures and decorative wares also occurs.
