Method of decoration utilizing a sharp instrument while drawing or creating a pattern. Common on Chinese pottery and porcelain from particularly the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when subtlety was preferred to "garish" colored decoration. Typically incised decoration is imitated by press moulding already in the following Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368).
After this period decorations are predominantly done by painting with underglaze cobalt.
