GLOSSARY

Cartouche

In architecture, a scroll-edged panel, tablet or shield surrounded by scrollwork and foliage. By extension, the word is applied to any oval shape or even to a decorative shield, whether scroll-like in appearance or not, often bearing an inscription, monogram or coat of arms.
