Chaire (Cha-ire) (Jp.) Tea container

A Chaire is a tea caddy for powdered green "thick tea" (Koicha) and one of the basic tools for the Japanese tea ceremony.

The Chaire are usually ceramic and can come with an ivory lid with a gold leaf underside. The chaire is usually tall and thin however shapes may vary significantly. They are stored in decorative bags called Shifuku.

There are two types of tea caddy. One is Natsume and another is Chaire. The Natsume is for thin tea powder and the Chaire is for thick tea.
