In Europe already before the First World War decorating with the help of stencils had come into use. The design was cut out of metal or paper. This stencil was then put over the object and the colour was sprayed or painted on. In the 1920's, stencil designs were very popular.
In Europe and Later Chinese porcelain stencil designs were usually applied over the glaze. Stencil decorations appears to have been used in underglaze decoration both on Chiniese and Japanese porcelain.
