This photo is taken from SPOT Satellite - mostly French but with Swedish part ownership, from 800 km's height, December the 16th 1991.
Satellite pictures are taken by reflected sun light from the surface of the Earth in cetain wave lengths are caught by the sensors of the satelliten and send by radiosignal down to a signal reception station for recording and conputer analysing. Colors are normally not as the human eye would see them but for best possibly analysis. Vegetation for example is red in the picture since it is easier to se differences in red colors than in green.
Earth observation satellites are circulating the planet in north-south directions. The Swedish Space station at Esrange outside Kiruna is therefore with is northern location one of the most utilized in the world. In their "daugther company" SSC Satellitbild satellite data is processed into geographic information to users all around the world.
