Famille rose and later

Around the mid 17th century the Daoist inspired late Ming dynasty 'five color' decoration wucai was transformed into what we call the 'famille verte', the green family, of the Kangxi period (1662-1722). By and by during the Manchu Qing dynasty (1644-1911) the interest in colorful porcelain decorations grew. One of the stimulating forces was the Western demand for porcelain matching the Chinese colorful silk brocades that was all the rage in Europe and the flowery early Rococo style emerging in France, also much inspired by the contacts with China. This new style called for pastel colors and the most popular decoration of them all, large peonies in red and a pink enamel based on gold, gave name to the famille rose. From a Chinese point of view most now goes under the Chinese name for powder colors or 'enamels' ??? fencai.
